The executive branch enforces and carries out laws made by the legislative branch as long as they are approved by the head of state. You can find the executive branch in the constitution by looking up article 2. The executive branch consists of the president, the department of defense and many security agencies. To be the president, you must be a native born citizen, which means that you were born in the United States or someone who was born somewhere else but both of their parents are U.S citizens. You also must be at least 35 years old and have lived in the United States for 14 years. The president is elected when the people in each state vote republican, democrat or independent. Once they tally the votes up for each state, if it has more votes than the other party, then that state will usually turn to the winning party. Each state has electoral votes. Electoral votes are the votes casted by the representatives for each state in the Electoral College. These votes are determined by the population of a state. The Electoral College consists of 538 members, each states number of electoral votes it has are equal to the number of senators and representatives it has. The higher the stateââ¬â¢s population, the more electoral votes it has. You add the 435 representatives, the 100 senators and the 3 electors from the district of Colombia. The number of votes adds up to 538 votes. Thatââ¬â¢s why the presidential candidates always try to win the big states like Texas, Florida and New York because by the winning the big states they can win the electoral vote and most likely win the election. You can win the popular vote (which is the vote of the people) and not the electoral vote and still win the election but it rarely ever happens. There is a pres... ...ch. The national government has many powers. Their powers include regulating interstate and foreign trade setting standard weights and measures, creating and maintaining armed forces, making copyright and patent laws, establishing postal offices, establishing foreign policies, creating federal courts, coin money, declaring war and finally admitting new states. The State Government also has many powers. Their powers include creating corporation law, regulating trade within state, maintaining schools, establishing local governments, making laws about marriage and divorce, conducting elections and finally providing public safety. The national government and the state government share some powers but not many. These powers include providing for public welfare, administering criminal justice, chartering banks, raising taxes, and borrowing money.

John Milton :: essays research papers
John Milton was born in London, England (1608), to Sarah Jeffrey and his father, who was also named John. His mother was the daughter of a merchant sailor. His father was a law writer and also composed music. He inherited a love for art and music from his father. By the time he was twelve he entered Christââ¬â¢s college, Cambridge, where he wrote much religious poetry in Latin, Italian, and English. Milton was picked on often in the University, and he was expelled after starting a fist fight with his tutor. After that he spent six years at his fatherââ¬â¢s home, spending his days writing. During those six years he wrote: L'ALLEGRO, IL PENSEROSO (1632), COMUS (1634), and LYCIDAS (1637). In 1635, John Milton and his family moved to Horton, Buckinghamshire, where he continued his studies in Greek, Latin, and Italian. He traveled to France and Italy in the late 1630s, meeting the theologian Hugo Grotius in Paris, France, and the astronomer Galileo in Florence, Italy. Milton returned to London in 1639, where he set up a school for his nephews. He did not write much, for he was silenced by the civil war for twenty long years. Milton was concerned for the puritan cause, so during the civil war, he wrote a series of pamphlets against episcopacy (1642), on divorce (1643), in defense of the liberty of the press (1644), and in support of the regicides (1649). After the death of King Charles, Milton published THE TENURE OF KINGS AND MAGISTRATES (1649) sustaining the view that the citizens had the right to overthrow and punish tyrants. In 1951, he was faced with several unpleasant occurrences. He lost his eyesight for one, but even after that was put on trial for his controversial writings and political opinions. After the Restoration of Charles II in 1660, Milton was arrested as a noted defender of the Commonwealth, but was soon released. Milton paid a massive fine for his opposition. Besides the publicly setting fire to his works EIKONKLASTES (1649) and the first DEFENSIO (1651) in Paris and Toulouse, Milton escaped from further penalty following Restoration, but he lost much of his money and became a reasonably poor man, although Paradise lost sold over 1,800 copies.
Pauls Case by Willa Cather - Socratesââ¬â¢ Perspective of the Courageous
Paul's Case by Willa Cather - Socratesââ¬â¢ Perspective of the Courageous Paul In "Paul's Case" by Willa Cather, Paul becomes aware of the fact that his life is not exactly what could be called "liveable." His physical home leaves something to be desired, his teachers clearly dislike him, and his father is not the "model" father. Paul feels that these things are unjust and detrimental to his life. Due to the unjust things in his life, he decides to rid himself of them by running away. Later on when he decides to kill himself, he showcases his possession of the cardinal virtues. Paul's decision to kill himself is just, and therefore moderate, wise, and courageous. Paul is just in killing himself because he possesses moderation. Socrates says moderation is agreement between the classes of society (432b). For an individual, moderation is agreement between the parts of the soul. Paul has moderation due to the fact that he does kill himself. The parts of the soul were apparently in agreement. Evidence that his soul was in agreement is that he would not have killed himself if it were divided. The parts of his soul had to come to the same conclusion. For Paul that conclusion was suicide; the reasoning part decided that the only way to escape his dreadful life at home was to kill himself, the spirited part actually caused Paul to jump in front of the train, and the appetitive part caused Paul to want to jump in front of the train. To explain what all of this means, Gary Colwell presents this argument, "Harmony in the soul, that is, in the individual, results from reason controlling and guiding the individual's life, with the passions and appe tites serving in subordinate positions below" (400). Ac... ...introduced to his previous unjust life. To preserve Paul's "inner harmony" (443e), he has to kill himself. Suicide was the only thing left o make Paul happy. Gregory Vlastos, in his review of Terence Irwin's article, "Plato's Moral Theory," argues that "when we have been brought to see what our soul would be like if it were Platonically just (intellect, emotion, and appetite rationally harmonized in friendly, nonrepressive, order) . . . we shall have gained a new vision of happiness, which only that kind of soul . . . could realize" (127). Paul is happy because he escapes the pressures of life. Paul's decision to kill himself takes into account all of the cardinal virtues and is therefore just. Works Cited: Cather, Willa. Rat Pow
RAT POW Problem Statement: I this POW we were assigned to find the population of the exponential growth of a rat population, residing on a perfect, utopian island after a year. Organisms will flourish prosperity on the Island and no deaths would occur. The journey began when merely 2 full-grown rats, the one original male and female, arrived on the island. Their offspring would be determined by the following: Every day from January 1st, the original mother would give birth to a liter of 6 infant rats. Within this 6, half would consist of female offspring, leaving the other half to become male. She would continue to produce offspring every 40 days (the 1st Generation of Offspring). The 1st Generation would then produce their 2nd generation of offspring 120 days after their birth. Finally, the 2nd Generation would produce the 3rd Generation of their offspring after 40 days. Process: I organized my final data in a table format, but it was not a result of my first attempts to solve the pr oblem by any means. First, I made a sort of chart solely calculating which days were the markers for the original Mother's babies (the 1st Generation).I counted 40 continuous days, starting from January 1st, and when I got to the 40th day after January first (which was February 9th) I started over counting from 1-40 once again. I continued on with this method to conclude that 9 cycles of descendants would occur during 365 life span, reproducing every 40 days. In addition, I also had the dates of each of the days that Generation 1 would be produced, which I found out was no use to my problem or solution. From there, I thought I could simply count the days that the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generations were born, but then I came to a realization with just how many rats there would actually be.I came to the assumption that such a tactic would take a tremendous amount of time to complete and that a different, and more efficient maneuver should be perused. So I got together with a friend to see if we could come up with a competent strategy. We decided we would conduct the family tree strategy, so we first taped many regular printer paper sheets together to have enough space for the tree. We started with a Male and Female plot, and attempted to branch of from there to depict each generation accurately. We quickly learned that our procedure, and the rate we were going, would probably take days to complete and that is was completely insufficient time-wise. We tried to find ways around it, and eventually decided to call it a day. At home, I explain the situation to one of my parents and they have me the idea for a table. It would consist of time intervals by day (day 1, 40, 80, 120, 160, 200, 240, 280, 320, and 360), the breeders during that time/day, and the number of rats during that day included in either the 1st Generation, 2nd Generation, of 3rd Generation. On day 1, there were 2 Breeders (the original Mother and Father), six 1st Generation babies, and no 2nd or 3rd Generat ions yet. On day 40, there were still only 2 breeders (the Mother and Father because the babies had just been born), 6 1st Generation baby rats, 6 2nd Generation baby Rats, and no 3rd generation baby rats. As you can observe in the table below, I continued on with the pattern until I got to day 360 and every column in the table with completed. I counted up the total number of rats in every column, and it totaled up to 1,808 rats which I knew was correct because I had official verification.

Lord Liverpool Government’s Reactionary Policies in the Years
In early 19th century Britain, law enforcement e. G. The police, was unheard of, this was a problem for Lord Liverpool government due to the fact that there was no physical means of controlling activity on a public level. When rebellions began to take place and started occurring more frequently Liverpool decided that something needed to be done. As a response, particularly to Spa fields, Liverpool Imposed the ââ¬ËSuspension of Habeas Corpus' in 1817.This suspension along with the Sedulous meetings act worked as a short-term deterrent to protesters and due to Its severity of enmeshment, meant that it was particularly effective at stopping any form of revolt. The physical protesting was bad enough for Lord Liverpool, however it was only small part of why he imposed reactionary measure; a large part of it was down to fear and paranoia. In 1789 Lord Liverpool had been in France and witnessed firsthand the storming of the Pastille. The fall of the Pastille signified the fall of order, p ower and structure of the hierarchy in France; this was exactly what Liverpool was most afraid of happening in England, and that people would turn against the overspent the country and each other. In 1819 60,000 people met at ââ¬ËPetrol' to listen to Henry Hunt talk about reforms, It was a peaceful protest that went wrong. Cavalry had been sent by magistrates who feared there would be a revolution due to the sheer amount of people, magistrates lost their nerve and sent In the cavalry causing major panic ââ¬â 11 people were killed and over 400 Injured. As a response the Six Acts was introduced giving magistrates powers to invade people's privacy if they ever suspected any conspiracy or plot to create a mass gathering, it provided more representative actions to stop people in their tracks. Lord Liverpool paranoia meant that he was transfixed on keeping control on power, an idea that could be considered as the root of his reactionary policies. In response to the Coat Street consp iracy and the Derbyshire risings spies were used infiltrate radical groups.Spies enabled the government to stay one step ahead of the protesters. Staying In power was vital for Liverpool, he was very aristocratic and most of his reactionary policies benefited those of higher classes; as they provided the cost political support for Lord Liverpool. By using spies there was the allusion that the government were out to protect the monarchy and the aristocracy, further building support for Lord Liverpool. It also gave Liverpool means of keeping tabs on want was going on In ten puddle demeanor, tans links Dacca no law enforcement so spies were used instead. Tanat tanner was During the first half of this ministry the cabinet consisted of eighteenth century politicians who were unwilling or unable to see the need to alter a constitution which invited them, yet still wanted to have total control over the people of England; this was virtually impossible when the rate of expansion, industry and rebellion was so fast.It wasn't until the second half of this period, with the influence of younger men from different backgrounds and of differing outlooks, that major reform took place. Liverpool followed reactionary policies with the sole intention of them to be short- term fixes in society, made as a response to rebellions that were simply unheard of in Britain at this time. The main driving force behind these policies being made wasLiverpool paranoia of a revolution occurring fuelling his need to keep and maintain control over the people of Britain. Liverpool also had to contend with the fact that he had never planned to come across such anger and desire for change that he had to think quickly to put measures in place that would make a difference, whether they be harsh or not. They were simple a means of gaining control and power back over the people so some reformations could be made without the imminent threat of revolution, as was thought by Lord Liverpool.

Econ 101
Economics: intro â⬠¢Economic questions arise bc we want more than we can get. â⬠¢Inability to satisfy want: scarcity â⬠¢Incentives: rewards that encourage action or penalties that discourage action. â⬠¢Economics studies the allocation of scarce recourses among people â⬠¢Alfred marshell (1842-1924) shaped macro economics â⬠¢Joan robinson: ââ¬Å" the main reason to study econ is to avoid being fooled by it Two main parts: A) Microeconomics: studying the choice of individual decision makers. And how they interact in markets B) macroeconomics: how the overall economy performs. 2 big questions 1.What, how and for whom do goods and services get produced? 2. When do choices made in self interest align with the social interest? Answer 1) â⬠¢what: goods and services are objects that people value and are produced to satisfy human wants â⬠¢how: factors of production. A) Land: natural recourses. B) labour: work time & effort. ââ¬Å"quality of labourâ⬠(huma n capital). C) capital: tools, equipment, machines, computers, buildings.. D) entrepreneurship: human resource hat organizes the above. â⬠¢For whom: who gets good: services depends on the incomes people earn. oLand=rent oLabour=wages oCapital=interest oEntrepreneurship=profitAnswer 2) â⬠¢We make choices in self interest oChoices you think are best for you â⬠¢Choices that are best for society are said to be in the ââ¬Å"social interestâ⬠oUses resources efficiently oDistributes goods ââ¬Å"fairlyâ⬠When does self-interest align with social interest? (important) â⬠¢Environmental issues â⬠¢Bad corporate responsibility The ââ¬Å"Economicâ⬠way of thinking Choice under scarcity => trade offs Opportunity cost: the highest valued alternative that you give up to get something. Choices at the ââ¬Å"marginâ⬠â⬠¢We look at the tradeoffs ââ¬Å"at the marginâ⬠Marginal benefit (MB): benefit from an incremental increase in an activity.Marginal cost (MC): opportunity cost from an incremental increase in an activity. People respond to incentives MB>MC=> do more of an activity MB does less of an activity Lesson 2 Recap: â⬠¢Economics oMicro oMacro â⬠¢2 big question owhat, how, for whom oself interest vs social interest â⬠¢opportunity cost otrade-offs â⬠¢thinking at the ââ¬Å"marginâ⬠Lesson 2 Water vs. diamonds Water: essential but almost costless Diamonds: not essential but very costly What is value? What gives things value? Labour theory of value: the value of a commodity is proportional to the amount of labour that goes into it. Abandoned: ex. Cement lifejacketEconomists think about value differently: 1. the value of something is what youââ¬â¢re willing to give up to get it. 2. Economists think about marginal value instead of total value. Water is plentiful= marginal value low Diamonds are scarce= marginal value high Positive and normative statements Positive: statements of facts about observable data Normative: statements about what ought to be. Value judgments Ex. 20% of teens smokeâ⬠¦ Positive: â⬠¢Are you more likely to smoke if your parents do? â⬠¢Does living location affect likelihood of smoking? â⬠¢Are smoking rates different across education levels? â⬠¢Self reported reasons for smoking Do prices affect smoking rates? Normative: â⬠¢Kids shouldnââ¬â¢t smoke Cause and effect: Just because two things happen together doesnââ¬â¢t mean that one causes the other. Ex: ice cream sales & deaths by drowning â⬠¢Both related to temperature Economists try to unscramble cause and effect by building models. Model: a purposeful simplification of the real world. Ex: paper airplane Simplification. Learn about: aerodynamics, wind structureâ⬠¦ Cant learn about: thrust, fuel capacity, enginesâ⬠¦ Maps are models: Subway map â⬠¢Lines â⬠¢Stops Doesnââ¬â¢t show curves or turns Road map â⬠¢Street names â⬠¢Turns/curves Satellite photo à ¢â¬ ¢Adds detailGraphs: Reveal relationships between variables 3 main types: 1. Time series 2. Cross sectional 3. Scatter plots Lesson 3 Recap: water/diamondsâ⬠¦ Value: what youââ¬â¢re willing to give up to get something â⬠¢Positive vs normative â⬠¢Cause & effect oModels â⬠¢Graphs in economics The Economic problem â⬠¢Production possibilities frontier (ppf) Model: focus on tradeoffs between 2 goods. (holding other goods constant) PPF shows boundary between what we can produce and what is unattainable Building a PPF: First good: ââ¬Å"numbersâ⬠Ex. X + 3=7 Second good: ââ¬Å"wordsâ⬠Our PPF for Xââ¬â¢s & words EX. In textbook PFFââ¬â¢s show marginal cost. opportunity cost of producing one more unitâ⬠Preferences& marginal benefit â⬠¢your ââ¬Å"likesâ⬠and dislikes marginal benefit: what your willing to give up to get an additional unit of something what does MB look like? Principle: the more you have of a good, the less youâ⬠â¢re willing to pay for an additional unit. Allocative efficiency: $ up the left side of graph, pizza across the bottom. MC is a positive incline, MB is a negative decline at pt Awe have allocative efficiency. We cant produce more of any one godd without giving up some other good that we value more highly lesson 4 recap: â⬠¢allocative efficiency (MB=MC)Economic growth isnââ¬â¢t free 2 key factors â⬠¢Technological change oresearch and development â⬠¢Capital accumulation oDevote resources to production of capital Both require resources that could be used for current consumption â⬠¢Economic growth doesnââ¬â¢t eliminate scarcity â⬠¢Opportunity cost of growth is reduced current consumption Consuming outside your PPF. â⬠¢Gains from trade Imagine if you produced everything you consumeâ⬠¦(ââ¬Å"Autarkyâ⬠) Producing one (or a few) goods and trading with others is called ââ¬Å"specializationâ⬠Gains from specialization come from exploiting ââ¬Å "comparative advantageâ⬠Absolute Advantage: More productive at somethingComparative Advantage: Producing at a lower opportunity cost Ex: textbook smoothie bar exampleâ⬠¦ On lined paper Liz: absolute advantage in smoothies. And comparative advantage in smoothies Joe: no absolute advantage but comparative advantage in salads Where does Comparative advantage come from? â⬠¢Over time people or countries can develop comparative advantage through repeated production. ââ¬Å"learning by doingâ⬠(dynamic Comparative advantage) Economic Coordination? â⬠¢Who organizes all this? Centrally planned economy: USSR, chinaâ⬠¦ Decentralized market system: most countries Decentralized markets rely on 4 institutionsâ⬠¦ON MIDTERM . Firms: hire and organize factors of production 2. Markets: any arrangement that connects buyers and sellers 3. Property Rights: social arrangements that govern ownership and use 4. Money: any commodity or token that is generally accepted as a mea ns of payment Markets coordinate economic activity through price adjustments. Lesson 5 Demand and supply In a market system, economic coordination happens through price adjustment Competitive markets: many buyers and many sellers â⬠¢Prices determine the rate at which goods can be exchanged Money Price: number of dollars Relative price: $price of one good relative to anotherEx: coffee:$2, gum$1 (Money), one coffee costs 2 gums Demand: different than ââ¬Å"wantâ⬠â⬠¢To demand something you must: a. Want it b. Be able to afford it c. Plan to buy it Law of demand: holding everything else equal, the higher the price of the good the lower the quantity demanded 2 effects cause this: a. Income effect: when price increases, your money doesnââ¬â¢t buy as much b. Substitution effect: when a price increases people substitute to purchasing other goods Ways of representing demand: a. Demand schedule b. Demand curve: When the price of this good changes we move along the demand cur veChanges in Demand: when things other than the price of the good change, the demand curve shifts. Things that shift demand: â⬠¢Nature â⬠¢Quality â⬠¢Tastes/preferences â⬠¢Income â⬠¢Price of other goods oComplements: consume these goods together (Ex. Shoes, always need both) oSubstitutes: consume one or the other â⬠¢Expected future prices â⬠¢Population Supply: a firm supplies a good if itâ⬠¦ a. Has the resources and technology to produce it b. Can profit from producing it c. Plans to produce and sell it Law of supply: holding everything else equal, the higher the price of a good, the more is supplied The supply curve:IN binder Example Changes in Supply: â⬠¢Input prices â⬠¢Prices of related goods produced â⬠¢Expected future prices â⬠¢Number of suppliers â⬠¢Technology â⬠¢nature Lesson 6 Market Equilibrium Equilibrium: a state where opposing forces balance each other â⬠¢consists of a market price and quantity Changes in equilib rium (pg 74) 1. French fry demand 2. Market for cocaine 3. Market for kitchen sinks 4. Market for barrels of crude oil 5. Market for fresh orange juice Midterm exam review â⬠¢20 multiple choice â⬠¢2 short answers â⬠¢Multiple choice worth 2points â⬠¢Short answers worth 10 â⬠¢Exam worth 60 â⬠¢Chapters 1-3 Ch 1 â⬠¢What is microeconomics Scarcity and tradeoffs â⬠¢What is value â⬠¢2 big questions owhat how and for whom oself interest vs. social interest â⬠¢positive vs normative statements â⬠¢graphs in econ Ch 2 â⬠¢ppf and opportunity cost â⬠¢marginal benefit and marginal cost â⬠¢allocative efficiency â⬠¢growth â⬠¢specialization and trade â⬠¢absolute and comparative advantage â⬠¢economic coordination Ch3 â⬠¢demand curve (law of demand) â⬠¢movement along vs shifts of the demand curve â⬠¢factors that shift the demand curve â⬠¢supply curve (law of supply) â⬠¢movement along vs shifts of the supply curv e â⬠¢factors that shift the supply curve â⬠¢equilibrium pg 74, 75 changes in equilibrium Lesson 7 October 11, 2011 Modeling demand 1. Demand schedule (table) 2. Demand curve (picture) 3. Demand equation Ex: in notebook In general: P=a-bQ. (a and b are some numbers) A: vertical intercept B: absolute value of slope Modeling supply* 1. G 2. G 3. Modeling equilibrium â⬠¢At equilibrium price (P) quantity demanded equals quantity supplied Equilibrium quantity Q Ex: finding equilibrium Demand: p=800-2Q Supply: P=200+Q â⬠¢Make the right hand side of each equation equal 800-2Q=200+Q 600=3Q 200=Q Elasticity (Ch 4) Law of demand: when price increases quantity demanded falls This gives us direction Elasticity measures how much demand changes Ex: Good X â⬠¢Price increases by 1$ â⬠¢Demand drops by 100 unts Good Y â⬠¢Price increases 200$ â⬠¢Demand drops by 1000 units Cant compare the 2! In order to compare goods we need a measure of responsiveness Price of elasticit y demand= % change in quantity demanded over % change in price Ex: ticket price 21$- 9tickets/hr 19$-11 tickets/hr Find elasticity of demand 1. % change in quantity =change in Q =2/(over) 10 (from 9 to 11) over Average Q Fuck it. In notebook What does elasticity number mean? In notebook Lesson 8Elasticity of demand = % change in quantity demanded/ over % change in price If elasticity is 1 elastic Tuesday October 18, 2011 What affects elasticity? 1. Closeness of substitutes 2. Proportion of income spent on a good 3. Time since price change Other Elasticities 1. Cross elasticity = %change in demand for x % change of price of good Y if X & Y are: Substitutes: positive Complements: negative 2. Income elasticity = %change in demand %change in income bigger than 1: income elastic. As income increases demand increases a lot Between 0 &1: income inelastic. Income increases, demand increases by a littleNegative: inferior good. Income increases, demand decreases Elasticity of Supply = % Chang e in quantity supplied % Change in price What affects supply elasticity? 1. Resources substitutions possibilities 2. Time frame for supply decisions Efficiency and Equity (Ch5) Markets are one way of allocating goods Do they do a good job? A. Efficiency (do the goods go to those that value them the most? ) B. Fairness Ex. X pinsâ⬠¦ how should we allocate them? 1. Contest: 5 highest grades Ex sports, performance bonuses Pros: â⬠¢May encourage effort Cons: â⬠¢Goods may not go to those people that value them the most 2.First come, first serve: first 5 people to show up get them Ex: walk in clinics Pro: â⬠¢People who value the good highly will line up early Con: â⬠¢May get allocated to those with a low opportunity cost of their time 3. Command System: I decide who gets them Ex: how tasks get allocated inside a firm Pro: â⬠¢May work well when tasks/people are familiar and authority well defined Con: â⬠¢ I canââ¬â¢t tell who values the good the most 4. Lotte ry: draw names from a hat. Ex. Dorm rooms Pros: â⬠¢Fairâ⬠¦everyone gets an equal shot Cons: â⬠¢No reason to expect that high value people will get the good 5. Majority rule voteEx, voting politicians Pro: everyone gets an equal say Con: special interest group 6. Personal characteristics If you have a brown belt Ex. Relationships Pros: may work if characteristic highly related to value people have for the good Cons: discrimination 7. Force: everybody fights Ex organized crime/war Cons: strongest might not value the highest Pros: Force can work well in the background oCourts can forcibly reallocate goods 8. Market Mechanism oWhoever is willing to pay the price gets the good Pros: people who have high values are willing to pay more and are more likely to get itCons: people might not have enough money Tuesday October 18, 2011 Midterm #2 November 3 (Ch 4,5,6) â⬠¢Demand and supply â⬠¢Elasticity (ch 4) â⬠¢Efficiency and equity (ch 5) Obstacles to efficiency â⬠¢P rice and quantity regulations (govââ¬â¢t actions) â⬠¢Taxes and subsidies (govââ¬â¢t actions) Externalities: your actions impose costs or benefits on others Ex. Smoking. A person might take into account only their own personal benefits and costs but ignore social costs. (second and smoke) OR. Pollution. Firm doesnââ¬â¢t account for external social cost that its production creates. Public Goods A.Consumption by one person doesnââ¬â¢t ââ¬Å"use upâ⬠the good. B. Anyone can consume the good without paying Ex: lighthouse: people want to use these goods without paying. ââ¬Å"freeridingâ⬠. These are usually under provided Monopoly: a single firm sets the market price â⬠¢Price is higher, quantity is lower Fairness 1. Utilitarianism, (Jeremy bentham, John Stuart mill) â⬠¢Ã¢â¬Å"The Greatest Happiness for the greatest numberâ⬠â⬠¢people are roughly the same â⬠¢the marginal value of money is lower when you have more of it â⬠¢Redistribute wea lth to achieve equality (tax rich, subsidize poor) Problems: A) taxing income: less income generation (work)B) taxing capital: less capital produced (slower growth) C) costs in administering taxes (more fair but size of the ââ¬Å"pie shrinks) 2. Rawls: theory of Justice â⬠¢Fairness of society judged by the well being of the person who is poorest â⬠¢(Equal shares of a small pie) may be worse than (unequal shares of a larger pie) 3. Fairness in Rules, not outcomes â⬠¢Emphasis on equality of opportunity Robert Nozick A. Strong private property rights B. Private property should only be transferred through voluntary exchange Problems: A. No room for redistribution after the fact B. No taxes or government since these arenââ¬â¢t voluntaryGovernment Actions in Markets (Ch 6) Price ceiling: govââ¬â¢t regulations that makes it illegal to charge a price higher than some specified level â⬠¢Set above equilibrium price= no effect â⬠¢Set below equilibrium price= Example in notebook Black market â⬠¢Illegal market in which price is higher than price ceiling â⬠¢Graph in notebook â⬠¢ Thursday October 27, 2011 20 m/c few short answer midterm review: â⬠¢Note on demand on supply equations (end of ch 3) â⬠¢Elasticity (Ch 4) know how to calculate and know what it is â⬠¢Efficiency and equity (Ch 5) *consmer and producer surplus â⬠¢Government actions in markets (Ch 6) Price ceilings oPrice flooring oTaxes Price Floors: Mandatory minimum price Ex. Minimum wage Graph in notebook â⬠¢Unemployment increases search costs â⬠¢More power to firms in hiring decisions â⬠¢Black markets oEx. Illegal labour markets where people are paid below the min wage oIn notebook Taxes: When the government taxes a good the price paid by consumers and the price received by producers are now different Ex. Govââ¬â¢t puts a $5 (per unit) tax on producers In notebook Tuesday November 1, 2011 Midterm Thursday Material: 1. Note on demand and supply equations. (end of Ch 3) 2. Elasticity (Ch4) â⬠¢Price elasticity Elasticity and total revenue (figure 4. 5 in text) â⬠¢Cross elasticity and income elasticity â⬠¢Supply elasticity 3. Efficiency and equity (Ch 5) â⬠¢Alternative allocation methods â⬠¢Consumer and producer surplus â⬠¢Efficiency of equilibrium â⬠¢Ã¢â¬Å"fairnessâ⬠4. Government Actions (Ch 6) â⬠¢Price ceilings â⬠¢Price floors â⬠¢Taxes Tuesday November 14, 2011 Global Markets Many of the goods and services you consume arenââ¬â¢t produced in Canada Ex. Iphones (all over), clothes (china), tech support (india) â⬠¢Part of the globalization process oImports: goods we buy from other countries oExports: goods we sell to other countriesGlobal Imports: Exports in 2008 =$35 trillion Canada: â⬠¢exports: $535 billion. Agriculture, forestry, energy, mining, machinery, automotive, aircraft â⬠¢Imports: $503 billion In binder example Tariffs: a tax imposed by the importing coun try on goods that come from another country Arguments for protection 1. Infant industry Argument â⬠¢We need to protect domestic industries when they start so that they can mature enough to compete on world markets. â⬠¢Develop comparative advantage â⬠¢Everyone can argue this 2. Barriers to trade to protect jobs. â⬠¢Trade costs jobs â⬠¢There isnââ¬â¢t a ââ¬Å"fixed number of jobsâ⬠â⬠¢Trade also creates jobs
